I am a criminal appellate lawyer based in Plymouth, Michigan . I specialize in criminal appeals to the Michigan Court of Appeals, Michigan Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. As a result, I have a number of published decisions. I also specialize in parole appeals, I have published numerous articles on the subject, and was on the committee which drafted the current court rule on this issue. I am an active participant in the Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference, and chaired the Committee which drafted the first set of Internal Operation Procedures for the Michigan Court of Appeals. I also frequently speak on post-conviction remedies in Michigan, including Motions for Relief from Judgment under Mich. Ct. R. 6.500 ("6500 motions") and on federal habeas corpus. I am also the author of the only article on Michigan's post-conviction remedies. |
The key to winning any appeal is resources. Although I am a solo practitioner, my law library competes with the large civil firms. My in house database includes Michigan decisions back to the 19th century, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit decisions back to the beginning of Federal Reporter,United States Supreme Court decisions back to the beginning of the Court, and electronically updated state and federal statutes. Via a high speed electronic connection, I also have a bulk rate subscription to all regional reporters, most state statutes, and hundreds of law reviews. I also have what I believe is the largest collection of unpublished parole board decisions which have been digitized and stored on my in house network. Additionally, my office is within easy driving (or in the summer biking) distance of the University of Michigan Law Library, the largest law library in the Midwest.
We maintain close working connections with several private investigators, psychologists, and parole consultant which insures that we have the ability to be a one stop shop for most clients.
I currently have two attorneys who are officially designated "of counsel." Suzanne Carol Schuelke works with me on a number of cases and is an experienced appellate practioner and former chairperson of the Prison & Corrections Committee of the State Bar of Michigan. My other of counsel, Mark Peter Stevens has been called one of the best lawyers in Northern Michigan by Michigan Lawyer's Weekly. He is also admitted to practice in the State of New York and is also licensed as a Solicitor by the United Kingdom.
